HR specialists top job for temp growth, research says

Human resource specialists are expected to see the greatest percentage increase for temporary job growth at 4 percent, according to a list of the fastest-growing occupations and metros for temporary employment in 2014 compiled bt CareerBuilder and Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. The research also predicts Grand Rapids, Mich., will have the greatest percentage increase for temporary job growth.

“Coming off of a hard-hitting recession, companies want more flexibility in their workforce to quickly ramp up and ramp down their businesses as needed. Temporary workers provide that flexibility,” said Eric Gilpin, president of CareerBuilder's Staffing & Recruiting Group. “Temporary employment is growing across industries and metros, and providing great opportunities for workers to test-drive different work experiences and network with employers.”

Occupations that pay in the middle-wage to high-wage range, and are expected to see the greatest percentage increase for temporary job growth in 2014, include:

  • Human resources specialists: up 4 percent to 64,049 jobs
  • Customer service representatives: up 3 percent to 93,041 jobs
  • Construction laborers: up 3 percent to 75,183 jobs
  • Administrative assistants: up 3 percent to 71,573 jobs
  • Registered nurses: up 3 percent to 58,000 jobs

Metro areas that employed at least 20,000 temporary workers in 2013 and are projected to have the greatest percentage increase for temporary job growth in 2014 are:

  • Grand Rapids, Mich.: up 8 percent to 27,465 total temp jobs
  • Indianapolis, Ind.: up 7 percent to 37,382 total temp jobs
  • Seattle-Tacoma, Wash.: up 6 percent to 38,090 total temp jobs
  • Orlando, Fla.: up 6 percent to 25,512 total temp jobs
  • Riverside-San Bernardino, Calif.: up 5 percent to 36,610 total temp jobs

The study used EMSI’s labor market database, which pulls from more than 90 national and state employment resources.
