HR report predicts steady but unspectacular hiring in September

September 05, 2013

Hiring will remain steady in September, but it will not be spectacular, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. About four in 10 manufacturers and service sector companies will hire in this month, based on the organization's leading indicators of national employment report.

The report's survey found 46.9 percent of service-sector employers plan to increase staff and 7.5 percent plan to decrease staff for a net increase of 39.4 percent, a four-year high. That compared to a net increase of 24.8 percent in September 2012.

Among manufacturing employers, 49.9 percent plan to add staff in September and 10.4 percent plan to cut for a net increase of 39.5 percent, down 1.3 percent from the net increase of 40.8 percent in September 2012.

“These steady but unspectacular employment expectations are currently not at a level that pushes recruiting difficulty up significantly,” said Jennifer Schramm, manager of workplace trends and forecasting at the Society for Human Resource Management. “Recruiting difficulty was pretty much unchanged in both sectors in August.”

The report is based on a survey of human resource executives at more than 500 manufacturing and 500 service-sector firms.
