Growth rate for IT jobs decelerates

The growth rate for information technology jobs slowed in August, according to the TechServe Alliance’s IT employment index released Friday. The number of IT jobs rose 0.15 percent from the previous month. They had risen by 0.43 percent in July and 0.51 percent in June, according to previous index readings.

“Despite the deceleration in the rate of growth, the future for IT employment still remains bright,” said TechServe Alliance CEO Mark Roberts. “While the deceleration is no doubt attributable to multiple factors, an inadequate supply of qualified IT talent remains a key reason. Even the Fed noted the impact of the shortage of IT talent with regard to New England region in its most recently released Beige Book.”

TechServe Alliance is a collaboration of IT staffing firms, solutions firms, clients, consultants and suppliers.

My site web site has HUNDREDS of IT and Engineering jobs that need to be filled. Most are full-time/perm with our end clients. Massive shortage of talent and, until kids start graduating with the difficult degrees (in STEM), foreigners will keep filling these jobs. Not since the "dot com" boom of the late 1990's have I had so many clients so desperate for talent, that they are having to sponsor for H1b applicants. They don't want to but they/we simply cannot find the talent needed to fill these jobs.

I completely agree with the previous comment. There is a huge need for qualified IT workers in Florida,where our company works. We are looking for some skilled IT professionals, but the reality shows the lack of this skilled workers.

We're facing the same issues even in the U.S. Education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics needs to be strengthened. Our colleges and universities are not graduating enough students with strong science degrees, computer science or otherwise. Graduates with the right kinds of backgrounds for data scientist – computer science, statistics, machine learning – are coming out of the universities, but they are not coming out in sufficient numbers. As a result, firms are struggling to hire full-time or contract staff for IT and engineering positions. In working with IT staffing agencies, I know it's important to know their true professional goals. Help them achieve their growth goals and help them establish a career growth path.
