Global organizations call for jobs policy

September 16, 2010

The heads of the International Labour Organisation and the International Monetary Fund called for a broad international commitment to a jobs-focused policy in response to the global economic downturn during a conference Monday in Oslo, Norway. Unemployment is up by more than 30 million worldwide since 2007 to more than 210 million, according to the ILO.

However, in a statement released Tuesday, the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (CIETT) said it regrets that conclusions coming from the conference did not specifically mention the role private employment agencies play in creating jobs.

"In many countries, private employment agencies contribute to the implementation of active labor market policies, which also aims to boost labor market integration and participation. This in return contributes to the reduction of short- and long-term unemployment," CIETT Managing Director Denis Pennel said in a statement. "In addition, our industry increases labor market participation by creating more work opportunities for more people. It therefore allows a more diverse workforce to enter the labor market and thus increases the overall employment level of a country."
