Germany – Hiring intentions up in March

27 March 2015

German companies have shown a greater willingness to hire new staff, according to the March Employment Barometer from the Institute for Economic Research (Ifo).

The index rose to 108.1 points in March, up from 106.8 in February 2015 and up from 107.7 points in March 2014. The March 2015 index is at the joint highest points level of the past 12 months, on par with January 2015, indicating a strong start to the year.

Similarly to January and February 2015, the manufacturing sector was one of the primary drivers of growth. In particular the automotive industry. In contrast with last month, retailers were more restrained in their hiring, while wholesalers looked to add headcount. There was little change in the hiring sentiment of the construction industry, while the services industry is looking to hire more staff.
