Firm fires striking contract workers

June 19, 2009

European oil company Total SA fired approximately 600 striking contract workers at an oil refinery in Lindsey, England, Bloomberg.com reported. The workers were employed by Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., the contractor, and Shaw Group, a subcontractor, according to Bloomberg.

The Associated Press said the strike came because of a dispute over the employment of foreign workers.

Total described the strike, which began June 11, as an "unofficial, illegal walk out." Total said it will give the fired contract workers a chance to reapply for their jobs through 5 p.m. Monday.

Total said it has 550 permanent staff at the Lindsey refinery and 350 permanent contract staff.
