Fewer affected by mass layoffs in June

More mass layoff actions took place in June than in May, but fewer workers were affected, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 1,643 mass layoff actions in June, up 17 from the previous month. However, the number of initial unemployment claims associated with the mass layoffs totaled 165,697 in June, down 5,690 from the previous month. A mass layoff action involves at least 50 workers from a single workplace.

The industry with the most initial unemployment claims from mass layoff actions in June, on a non-seasonally adjusted basis, was school and employee bus transportation at 17,059.
