U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Thursday it notified 1,000 employers across the country that it will audit their hiring records to check for illegal workers.

The names of the companies were not released. ICE said the firms were chosen because of investigative leads and because of the companies' connection to public safety -- such as privately owned critical infrastructure and key resources.

The audits include reviews of I-9 forms.

ICE said it has already reviewed 85,000 I-9 forms from 654 earlier audits that were announced in July. The agency said it issued 61 "notices of intent to fine" totaling $2.3 million from that batch of audits and is considering issuing 267 more notices.
