Feds Formally Delay ICD-10 Deadline

August 29, 2012

The federal government formally delayed for one year the compliance date for new codes used by healthcare providers to classify diseases and health problems, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services reported Friday. The codes are known as the “International Classification of Diseases, 10th Edition” or ICD-10.

The new compliance date is Oct. 1, 2014, which is pushed back from Oct. 1, 2013.

Staffing firms often supply healthcare information management workers who deal in the codes to organizations in the healthcare industry.

The delay won’t impact planning and implementation efforts at most healthcare professional organizations, Kforce Healthcare Solutions reported in June.
