July 28, 2010

A Cleveland-based temporary staffing firm will pay $650,000 to settle a discrimination lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the agency announced Tuesday.

The firm, Area Temps, allegedly assigned or declined job applicants by race, sex, Hispanic origin and age, according to the EEOC. Area Temps also allegedly complied with discriminatory requests made by clients, fired two of its internal employees after they opposed the practices and fired another worker for participating in the EEOC's investigation, the EEOC reported.

In addition to the payment, Area Temps must post a notice regarding this lawsuit's resolution that will be visible to employees as well as provide a notice about the lawsuit's resolution to applicants, management and client companies, according to the EEOC.
