Demographic trends of the on-demand workforce

October 23, 2015

SherpaShare, an on-demand worker support app, surveyed the on-demand workforce on demographics, income, and work trends. The top five trends include:

  1. Women drive more part-time, earn less than men: On average, female drivers report making 34% less gross driving income per month per person than men ($1,118 vs. $1,497, a difference of $379/month), but are far more likely to drive part time — men are 25% more likely to drive 30-40 hours/week, and 40% more likely than women to drive over 40 hours per week.
  2. One-fifth of on-demand drivers are female, with over-representation among “middle-aged” women: Women continue to make up 18.9% of the ridesharing driver market, but are 22% of drivers between 40 and 55 years old, and 26% of drivers under 25.
  3. Most current active drivers are relatively new to the industry, with two-thirds working less than six months: Eighteen percent of active drivers have been driving for less than 2 months; 65% have been driving for six months or less.
  4. The majority of on-demand drivers change their hours-per-week schedule over time: Three-quarters of drivers who’ve driven over three months changed the number of hours per week they’re working; 41% are eventually driving less, and 35% driving more.
  5. Seniors make less per month than younger drivers for the same amount of driving: Drivers over age 55 report making around 20% less per month on average, and the difference tends to increase with hours driven.

The survey included 963 responses and was conducted between Sept. 22 and Oct. 5, 2015. The survey was distributed within the SherpaShare app and on the SherpaShare blog. Over 90% of respondents were existing SherpaShare users. All respondents worked for an on-demand service.
