Contraction slows in service sector

Economic activity in the U.S. service sector contracted more slowly in May than in April, the Institute for Supply Management reported today. Its nonmanufacturing index rose to a reading of 44.0 in May from 43.7 in the previous month. However, only readings above 50 indicate expansion.
