Contract worker cuts - Schlumberger, Protective

Companies laying off contract workers include Schlumberger Ltd. and Protective Products of Amercia, according to news reports.

The Associated Press reported that Schlumberger Ltd., a Houston-based oilfield services company, plans to lay off 1,000 of its 19,000-member North American workforce with contract workers being cut as well as administrative support and field operations positions.

Protective Products of America Inc., a Sunrise FL-based maker of bulletproof vests and other products, said it was cutting its workforce by approximately 25%, the majority of which are contract workers.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation cut more than 750 temporary workers, The Associated Press reported.
