CompTIA says challenging IT hiring environment to persist

February 02, 2015

The challenge IT companies face in filling technical positions will likely persist in 2015, according to the IT Industry Outlook 2015 released Jan. 29 by CompTIA. The nonprofit association reports 68% of executives expect to face a challenging or very challenging hiring environment for technical positions this year.

A net 43% of US IT companies report having job openings. Another 36% say they are fully staffed, but would like to make new hires to support business expansion and growth. One in five companies have postponed or canceled projects due to understaffing.

The survey found 46% plan to invest in staffing levels in technical positions in 2015, up 5% from 2014; 11% plan to decrease staffing levels in technical positions and 43% expect no change.

Technicians and IT support and service personnel top the list of positions IT companies expect to pursue in 2015. Other in-demand skills include application development, cloud expertise, security expertise, network engineering and data and analytics expertise.

“Companies may be expanding or moving into new areas and need to employ more workers,” said CompTIA President and CEO Todd Thibodeaux. “Moreover, with large numbers of baby boomers nearing retirement, it is more important than ever to be thinking about the next generation of tech worker.”

CompTIA’s IT Industry Outlook 2014 is the result of an online survey of 649 IT companies.
