Census - Number of older workers rises

September 12, 2007

In the United States, 23.2% of people between the ages of 65 and 74 were in the labor force (either working or looking for work) in 2006, according to data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The number is up from 19.6% from 2000.

States with the lowest percentages of older workers included West Virginia (15.7%), Michigan (18.8%) and Arizona (19.4%). States with the highest rates of older workers included South Dakota and Nebraska with about one-third of people in the age group in the labor force.

This trend may be caused by people wanting to or having to work longer.
