Jobs website CareerBuilder acquired a majority stake in Textkernel, an Amsterdam-based software company providing semantic recruitment technology to the human resources market.

The transaction closed July 15; terms were not disclosed. The Textkernel brand will remain. Executives will also remain with the firm and retain their current titles.

Textkernel provides semantic search and matching technology to suggest the most relevant profiles in a client’s resume/cover letter database based on a job description. It also provides multilingual resume/cover letter parsing. Its technology can also convert resumes, cover letters or social media profiles into a searchable database record.

“Textkernel is closing the communications divide between recruiters and candidates by helping them speak the same language on the back end,” said CareerBuilder CEO Matt Ferguson. “We’re excited to leverage their technology to enhance our semantic search and data analytics globally, and provide a greater ROI for our clients’ most valuable and under-used asset: their internal candidate database. We can facilitate faster, easier and more successful connections between employers and job seekers.”

Textkernel was formed in 2001 as a private commercial R&D spin-off of research in natural language processing and machine learning at the universities of Tilburg, Antwerp and Amsterdam. It has not released revenue figures publicly, but has about 60 employees, as well as a pool of 25 PhD and masters students available for research and development. Textkernel’s solution is available in 16 countries. It is headquartered in Amsterdam and expects to add new offices in France and Germany.
