Canadian job number falls in March

Canadian employment fell by 54,500 jobs in March after posting an increase in February, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. Virtually all of the decline was in full-time employment.

In addition, the Canadian unemployment rate rose to 7.2 percent in March from 7.0 percent in February.

Ontario posted a decline of 17,400 jobs in March, 8,300 of them full time and 9,100 part time. Ontario’s jobless rate was 7.7 percent in March, unchanged from February.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest jobless rate among all provinces at 3.9 percent in March.
