Canadian employment rose in October with the number of jobs increasing by 1.2 percent from September for a total of almost 17.78 million in October, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 16,000 while the number of part-time jobs fell by 2,700.

Employment gains were seen in accommodation and food services, health care and social assistance as well as public administration. However, employment declined in business, building and other support services.

The Canadian unemployment rate remained at 6.9 percent in October, according to Statistics Canada.

Ontario lost 14,700 jobs in October for total employment of more than 6.9 million. Ontario gained 11,500 full-time jobs and lost 26,400 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged up to 7.4 percent in October from 7.3 percent in September.

Saskatchewan and Alberta posted the lowest unemployment rates among all provinces in October at 3.6 percent and 4.4 percent respectively.
