Canadian employment up 43,000, jobless rate lowest since 2008

Canada added approximately 43,000 jobs in October, and the unemployment rate edged down to 6.5 percent — the lowest since November 2008, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 26,500 and the number of part-time jobs rose by 16,500.

Total employment was 17.97 million.

Private-sector employees increased by 71,000 in October, with notable gains in retail and wholesale trade, manufacturing, as well as finance, insurance, real estate and leasing. Self-employment also increased, up 26,000. Those gains were offset as public sector employment fell by 54,000, mostly in public administration.

Among the provinces, Ontario added 37,000 jobs. Of those, 33,700 were full-time and 3,300 were part-time. Ontario’s unemployment rate in October was 6.5 percent.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in October at 3.5 percent.
