Canadian employment rises by 19,200

Canada added 19,200 jobs in April for a total of 17.1 million, Statistics Canada reported today. The nationwide unemployment rate, however, rose to 6.1% from 6.0% in March.

Employment increased in the accommodation and food services industry as well as in construction, according to the agency.

Ontario added 12,200 jobs in April, and unemployment in the province edged down to 6.3% from 6.4% in March.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among provinces in April at 3.3%.
