Canadian employment rate reaches record

Employment in Canada rose by 43,300 jobs month-over-month in February with employment at more than 17.1 million and the employment rate at a record high of 63.9%, Statistics Canada reported today. Much of the employment gains took place in Ontario.

In addition, the Canadian unemployment rate was 5.8% in February. That's unchanged from January and remains at a 33-year low.

Ontario added 31,000 jobs in construction; 20,000 in business, building, and other support services; and 11,000 in public administration, according to Statistics Canada. However, the province lost 20,000 manufacturing jobs. Ontario's unemployment rate fell to 6.1% in February from 6.3% in January.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among provinces in February at 3.5%.
