Canadian employment little changed in September

October 11, 2013

Canadian employment was little changed in September with the number of jobs increasing by 0.1 percent from August for a total of almost 17.78 million in September, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 23,400 while the number of part-time jobs fell by 11,500.

Employment gains were seen in finance, insurance, real estate and leasing as well as natural resources and agriculture. However, manufacturing and public administration posted declines.

The Canadian unemployment rate fell to 6.9 percent in September from 7.1 percent in August as fewer youths search for work, according to Statistics Canada.

Looking at Ontario only, employment was essentially flat with the province losing 1,700 jobs in September. Ontario gained 10,700 full-time jobs but that was more than offset by the loss of 12,300 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged down to 7.3 percent in September from 7.5 percent in August.

Saskatchewan and Alberta posted the lowest unemployment rates among all provinces in September with both at 4.3 percent.
