July 10, 2015

Employment in Canada fell by 6,400 in June from May, as gains in full-time work were offset by losses in part-time employment, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada.

The number of full-time jobs in June rose by 64,800, but part-time jobs fell by 71,200.

In the 12 months to June, employment increased by 176,100, or 1.0%, entirely the result of more full-time work.

Total employment in Canada was approximately 18.0 million in June, and the Canadian unemployment rate remained at 6.8% for the fifth consecutive month.

Fewer people worked in “other services” such as personal and laundry services and private household services, as well as in business, building and other support services. However, there were more workers in public administration.

Public-sector employment increased in June, while both self-employment and the number of private sector employees were little changed.

By province, employment fell in Quebec and New Brunswick, while it increased in British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador. Ontario gained 34,200 full-time jobs but lost 20,200 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate remained at 6.5% in June.
