Canadian employment edges down

Canada lost 6,600 jobs in September with employment at approximately 17.2 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The unemployment rate fell to 8.0% in September from 8.1% in August.

Full-time jobs rose by 37,100, but that gain was offset by a loss of 43,700 part-time jobs.

Ontario lost 22,900 jobs in September, losing 12,800 full-time jobs and 10,200 part-time jobs for employment of 6.7 million. Ontario's unemployment rate was unchanged in September at 8.8%.

Quebec gained approximately 15,200 jobs for employment of almost 4.0 million. Quebec gained 41,000 full-time jobs and lost 25,700 part-time jobs. Its unemployment rate fell to 7.7% in September from 8.2% in August.

Manitoba posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces at 5.4%.
