Canadian Employment Rises by 58,200

Canada added 58,200 jobs in April for total employment of  approximately 17.5 million, Statistics Canada reported today. Canada added 43,900 full-time jobs and 14,300 part-time jobs over the month.

The jobless rate rose to 7.3 percent in April from 7.2 percent in March amid an increase in the number of people searching for work.

However, Ontario lost 7,700 jobs in April for total employment of approximately 6.8 million. The province gained 23,100 full-time jobs but lost 30,800 part-time jobs.

Alberta added 10,700 jobs in April. The increase reflects the addition of 14,500 part-time jobs partially offset by a loss of 3,800 full-time jobs.

Alberta and Saskatchewan posted the lowest jobless rates among all provinces at 4.9 percent.
