Canadian Employment Insurance rolls fall 0.9%

The number of people receiving Canadian Employment Insurance jobless benefits fell by 7,330, or 0.9%, in November to 795,940, Statistics Canada reported today.

The number is down from its peak of 829,300 in June 2009.

In Ontario, the number of beneficiaries fell by just 0.2% in November to 274,550. The number of beneficiaries in Quebec fell by 3,720, or 1.8%, to 202,970 in November. And British Columbia posted a decline of 2,070, or 2.1%, to 94,330 in November.

The number of initial and renewal claims received in November rose by 1,300, or 0.5%, from the previous month to 270,700.

Employment Insurance provides financial assistance for unemployed workers.
