Canadian Employment Insurance number falls

The number of people receiving Canadian Employment Insurance jobless benefits fell by 40,120 in December to 744,010 -- the third monthly decline in a row -- Statistics Canada reported today. However, the number was still up 35.5% compared to December 2008.

In Ontario, the number of people receiving Employment Insurance fell by 16,920 to 251,430.

The number of initial and renewal Employment Insurance claims in December fell by 5,500, or 2.1%, to 264,700.

Employment Insurance provides financial assistance for unemployed workers.
