Canadian Employment Falls by 30,000

Canada lost 30,400 jobs in July for total employment of approximately 17.5 million, Statistics Canada reported today. Canada added 21,300 full-time jobs, but that was more than offset by the loss of 51,600 part-time jobs.

The unemployment rate edged up to 7.3 percent in July from 7.2 percent in June.

Ontario added 10,600 jobs in July for total employment of almost 6.8 million. The province added 13,700 part-time jobs, but lost 3,200 full-time jobs. Ontario’s unemployment rate was 7.9 percent in July, down from 7.7 percent in June.

Quebec lost 28,700 jobs in July. Its gain of 6,800 full-time jobs was more than offset by a loss of 35,600 part-time jobs.

Alberta posted the lowest jobless rate among all provinces at 4.6 percent.
