Canada loses 9,400 jobs in June despite full-time gain

Canada lost 9,400 jobs in June to a total of approximately 17.82 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 33,500 but the number of part-time jobs fell by 43,100.

Employment rose by 72,300, or 0.4 percent, from June 2013, the lowest year-over-year growth rate since February 2010, when year-over-year employment growth resumed following the 2008-2009 labor market downturn.

The Canadian unemployment rate edged up to 7.1 percent in June from 7.0 percent in May. Adjusted to the concepts used in the United States, the unemployment rate in Canada was 6.1 percent, the same as the rate in the United States, according to the report.

Ontario lost 33,900 jobs in June for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario lost 18,900 full-time jobs and 15,000 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5 percent in June from 7.3 percent in May.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in May at 3.9 percent.
