Canada loses 55,200 jobs

Employment in Canada fell by 55,200 jobs in July with total employment at almost 17.1 million, Statistics Canada reported today. The country lost approximately 7,100 full-time jobs and 48,100 part-time jobs.

The nationwide unemployment rate, however, edged down to 6.1% in July from 6.2% in June. Statistics Canada said the rate decreased as people, particularly youths, left the labor force.

In Ontario, employment decreased by 18,900 jobs in July, according to Statistics Canada. Still, the unemployment rate fell to 6.4% from 6.7% in June.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among provinces in July at 3.6%, up from 3.3% in June.
