Canada loses 5,700 jobs in January

Canada lost 5,700 jobs in January from December, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 5,600 in January, but part-time jobs fell by 11,300.

Compared to the same month a year ago, Canada was up by 126,100 jobs — an increase of 0.7% — in January.

Canada’s unemployment rate edged up to 7.2% from 7.1% in December.

Employment declined in agriculture; manufacturing; transportation and warehousing; and public administration. However, more people worked in information, culture and recreation as well as in the “other services” industry.
