Canada loses 28,900 jobs in April

Canada lost 28,900 jobs in April, to a total of approximately 17.80 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs fell by 30,900 and the number of part-time jobs rose by 2,000.

There has been little overall employment growth in Canada since August 2013, Statistics Canada reported.

The Canadian unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in April, unchanged from March.

Ontario gained 17,600 jobs in April for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario gained 25,800 full-time jobs but lost 8,200 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate rose to 7.4 percent in April from 7.3 percent in March.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in April at 3.4 percent.
