Canada loses 11,000 jobs in August

September 05, 2014

Canada lost 11,000 jobs in August, most of which were part time, to a total of approximately 17.85 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs fell by 2,300 and the number of part-time jobs fell by 8,700.

A report by Scotiabank raised concerns about the Canadian jobs numbers, saying a drop in payroll employment of 97,800 was almost fully offset by increase of 86,900 in self-employment.

The Canadian unemployment rate remained at 7.0 percent in August.

Ontario lost 7,900 jobs in August — the result of part-time job losses — for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario gained 18,100 full-time jobs but lost 26,100 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged down to 7.4 percent in August from 7.5 percent in July.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in August at 4.2 percent.
