Canada loses 10,700 jobs in November; unemployment rate edges up

Employment in Canada declined slightly in November following two months of notable gains, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. Canada lost 10,700 jobs in November to a total of approximately 17.96 million; the number of full-time jobs rose by approximately 5,700 and the number of part-time jobs fell by approximately 16,300.

The Canadian unemployment rate edged up to 6.6 percent in November from 6.5 percent in October.

Employment decreased in retail and wholesale trade as well as professional, scientific and technical services. At the same time, there were more people employed in natural resources and agriculture.

Following two months of increases, employment in Ontario fell by 33,900 in November for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario lost 27,200 full-time jobs and 6,800 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate rose to 7.0 percent in November from 6.5 percent in October.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in November at 3.4 percent.
