Canada employment little changed in July

Canadian employment was little changed in July; it only added approximately 200 jobs for total employment of 17.82 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada.

The Canadian unemployment rate edged down to 7.0 percent in July from 7.1 percent in June. Adjusted to the concepts used in the United States, the unemployment rate in Canada was 6.0 percent, compared with the U.S. rate of 6.2 percent, according to the report.

Ontario gained 15,100 jobs in July for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario lost 29,300 full-time jobs but gained 44,500 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged down to 7.4 percent in June from 7.5 percent in June.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in July at 3.9 percent.
