Canadian employment rose in November for the third consecutive month, with the number of jobs rising 0.1 percent during the month to a total of almost 17.82 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. Most of the gain was in part-time jobs, which rose by 20,000; the number of full-time jobs rose by 1,400.

Overall, employment increases in the private sector were partially offset by declines in the public sector.

The Canadian unemployment rate was 6.9 percent in November, unchanged from October.

Ontario gained 13,800 jobs in November for total employment of more than 6.9 million. Ontario gained 3,100 full-time jobs and 10,700 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged down to 7.2 percent in November from 7.4 percent in October.

Saskatchewan and Alberta posted the lowest unemployment rates among all provinces in November at 4.1 percent and 4.7 percent respectively.
