Canada adds jobs, but unemployment rises

Canada gained almost 15,000 jobs in March but the nationwide unemployment rate rose to 6.0% from the 33-year low of 5.8% in February as more people entered the labor market, Statistics Canada reported today.

Full-time employment fell by 19,600 in March while part-time employment increased by 34,200.

Ontario added 22,700 part-time jobs but lost 24,500 full-time positions in March, according to Statistics Canada. Unemployment edged up to 6.4% from 6.1% in the previous month.

Alberta continued to have the lowest jobless rate among provinces in March at 3.4%.
