Canada adds 43,000 jobs

Canada added an estimated 43,000 jobs in November bringing total employment to more than 17.0 million, Statistics Canada reported today. The number of jobs rose 2.3% between January and November compared with 1.8% for the same period last year.

However, the Canadian unemployment rate rose to 5.9% in November, up from the 33-year low of 5.8% in October.

Employment in Ontario fell by 4,900 jobs in November to 6.65 million while the unemployment rate rose to 6.2% from 6.0%. British Columbia, on the other hand, had a strong month adding nearly 26,000 jobs to reach almost 2.3 million employed.

Alberta continued to have the lowest unemployment rate among provinces at 3.6%, up from 3.4% in October.
