Canada adds 42,900 jobs in March

Canada added 42,900 jobs in March, driven by gains among youths, to a total of approximately 17.83 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs rose by 12,800 and the number of part-time jobs rose by 30,100.

Statistics Canada reported overall employment growth in Canada has been subdued since August 2013.

The Canadian unemployment edged down to 6.9 percent in March from 7.0 percent in February.

Ontario gained 13,400 jobs in March for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario lost 6,500 full-time jobs but gained 19,900 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in March from 7.5 percent in February.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in March at 4.5 percent.
