Canada adds 35,800 jobs in August

Canada gained 35,800 jobs in August for a total of approximately 17.22 million jobs but the unemployment rate edged up to 8.1% from 8.0% in July as more people entered the workforce, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada.

Full-time jobs rose by 79,900 in August, but that gain was partially offset by a loss of 44,100 part-time jobs.

The pace of job growth has slowed with Statistics Canada reporting monthly gain in employment averaged 13,000 in July and August but had averaged 51,000 in the first six months of the year.

Ontario gained 6,300 jobs in August for total employment of approximately 6.68 million. The province lost 6,600 full-time jobs but gained 13,000 part-time jobs. Ontario's unemployment rate rose to 8.8% in August from 8.5% in July.

Quebec gained 19,400 jobs in August for total employment of approximately 3.94 million. It gained 39,200 full-time jobs and lost 19,900 part-time jobs. Quebec's unemployment rate was 8.2% in August, unchanged from the previous month.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest jobless rate among all provinces in August at 4.8%
