Canada adds 25,800 jobs in May

Canada added 25,800 jobs in May, driven by gains in part-time work, to a total of approximately 17.83 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The number of full-time jobs fell by 29,100 and the number of part-time jobs rose by 54,900.

The Canadian unemployment edged up to 7.0 percent in May from 6.9 percent in April.

Statistics Canada reported overall employment growth in Canada has been subdued since August 2013.

Ontario gained 14,800 jobs in May for total employment of about 6.9 million. Ontario lost 30,400 full-time jobs but gained 45,200 part-time jobs during the month. Ontario’s unemployment rate fell to 7.3 percent in May from 7.4 percent in April.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in May at 3.4 percent.
