Canada adds 17,900 jobs in March

Canada added 17,900 jobs in March bringing total employment to 16.96 million, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. The unemployment rate in March was unchanged from February at 8.2%.

The job gains were in part-time jobs. Canada added 32,200 part-time jobs in March, but lost 14,200 full-time jobs.

By sector, Canada added 39,800 jobs in the goods-producing sector, but lost 21,900 in the service sector.

Ontario gained 10,300 jobs in March. The province gained 14,300 part-time jobs, but lost 3,900 full-time jobs.

The unemployment rate in Ontario fell to 8.8% in March from 9.1% in February.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest jobless rate among provinces in March at 5.1%.
