Canada adds 12,100 jobs in September

October 09, 2015

Canada added 12,100 jobs in September from August, according to seasonally adjusted numbers released today by Statistics Canada. A rise in part-time work largely offset a decline in full-time employment.

The number of full-time jobs fell by 61,900 in September, but part-time jobs rose by 74,000. However, on a year-over-year basis, employment was up by 161,200 jobs — an increase of 0.9% — with all of the gains in full-time work.

Canada’s unemployment rate edged up to 7.1% from 7.0% in August. Adjusted to US concepts, the unemployment rate in Canada was 6.0% in September compared to a rate of 5.1% in the US.

Employment rose in information, culture and recreation; “other services”; healthcare and social assistance; as well as business, building and other support services. Employment declined in educational services in September.

Total employment in Canada was approximately 18.0 million.

Provincially, employment rose in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Prince Edward Island, while it fell in Ontario as well as Newfoundland and Labrador.

Employment in Ontario fell by 33,800 jobs as increases in part-time work partially offset declines in full-time employment. The province lost 67,700 full-time jobs but gained 34,000 part-time jobs in September. Ontario’s unemployment rate edged up to 6.9% in September from 6.8% in August.
