Canadian workers are the most content and U.S. workers rank exactly in the middle, according to a survey by Monster.com and market research company GfK. The international survey data compared country-level job satisfaction.

Two-thirds of Canadians surveyed are content with their jobs. Twenty-two percent of Americans surveyed love their jobs so much they would do them for free but 15 percent said they dislike their jobs — the highest among all surveyed countries.

Countries ranked by job contentment include:

“What is striking about the findings is that the strength of a country’s labor market doesn’t necessarily correlate with workforce contentment,” said Chris Moessner, vice president for public affairs, GfK. “While workers in challenged markets may have had fewer opportunities to advance in terms of promotions or salary during the recent downturn, it has not necessarily affected their happiness.“

In the U.S. responses to the question, “Which of the following best describes how much you love your current job?” include:

• Love it — Would do it for free: 22 percent
• Like it a lot — You enjoy what you do, but you could like it more: 31 percent
• Like it — You like it well enough for now: 31 percent
• Don’t like it — You think you could do better: 6 percent
• Don’t love it at all — but it is a necessary evil: 10 percent

The survey included more than 8,000 people in Canada, France, Germany, India, Netherlands, U.K. and U.S.
