Canada - Job growth slows in first half of year

Statistics Canada reported Friday that employment growth averaged 14,000 jobs per month in the first half of 2013 compared to average job growth of 27,000 in the first six months of last year.

Canadian employment was little changed in June compared with May, for total employment of 17.75 million in June, according to Statistics Canada. Canada lost 32,400 full-time jobs, but it gained 32,200 part-time jobs.

The Canadian unemployment rate of 7.1 percent in June was unchanged from May.

Ontario lost 8,200 jobs in June for total employment of 6.89 million. The province lost 38,700 full-time jobs but that was partly offset by a gain of 30,500 part-time jobs.

Saskatchewan posted the lowest unemployment rate among all provinces in June at 3.7 percent.
