The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California recorded the highest unemployment rate in August, 14.8%, among all large U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The Las Vegas area posted the second-highest at 14.7%.
Reporting the lowest jobless rate among large metropolitan areas was the Washington DC area with a jobless rate of 6.2%. The Oklahoma City area came next at 6.3%.
Among U.S. metropolitan areas of all sizes, El Centro CA posted the highest jobless rate in August at 30.4%. Among the 12 metropolitan areas with jobless rates of at least 15.0% in August, nine were in California.
Bismarck ND registered the lowest unemployment rate among metropolitan areas of all sizes at 3.1% in August.
