California area posts highest jobless rate

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario area in Southern California posted the highest unemployment rate in August, 10.4 percent, among all large metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Oklahoma City, Okla., and the Minneapolis/St. Paul/Bloomington, Wis., area posted the lowest jobless rates at 4.7 percent each.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, the Yuma, Ariz., area posted the highest jobless rate at 32.6 percent in August. It was followed by El Centro, Calif., with an unemployment rate of 26.3 percent.
