Calian Technologies Ltd. (TSX: CTY) announced revenue rose 4.9% to C$37.1 million (US$35.4 million) in its business and technology services division -- which provides staffing as well as long-term management of projects, facilities and customer business processes -- in the company's fiscal first quarter ended Dec. 31, 2009.

Calian provides information technology, healthcare and technical staffing and solutions. The Ottawa-based company ranked No. 11 on Staffing Industry Analysts' list of largest Canadian staffing firms.

First-quarter gross margin in Calian's business and technology services division improved to 18.5% from 17.7% in the year ago quarter. The company said improved product mix from recently signed contracts boosted gross margin.

Total first-quarter revenue at Calian fell 5.4% on a year-over-year basis to C$52.1 million (US$49.7 million). First-quarter net earnings rose 3.7% to C$3.4 million (US$3.3 million).
