Birmingham, Washington post lowest jobless

The Birmingham AL and Washington DC areas posted the lowest jobless rates in November, 3.0% each, among U.S. metropolitan areas with populations of 1 million or more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Detroit registered the highest jobless rate among large metro areas in November at 7.2%. It was followed by two California areas, Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario and Sacramento, at 6.0% and 5.6% respectively.

Among metropolitan areas of all sizes, Idaho Falls ID reported the lowest jobless rate at 1.8%. The highest jobless rates were in El Centro CA and Yuma AZ at 19.1% and 12.4% respectively.

Overall, 175 of the 369 metropolitan areas reported higher unemployment rates in November than a year earlier. Jobless rates were lower in 165 metropolitan areas and unchanged in 29.
