Bad boss? Majority of employees say they’ve had one

October 16, 2015

Most employees, 87%, have experienced a “bad boss,” according to a survey released today — National Boss Day — by LaSalle Network, a recruiting and staffing firm headquartered in Chicago.

The survey also found 51% of respondents quit the company because of the bad boss. However, 83% of those who have quit because of a bad boss would have accepted an internal transfer, and 55% of respondents said they did not report the bad boss to leadership.

“As the saying goes, people don’t quit jobs, they quit managers,” said LaSalle Network Founder and CEO Tom Gimbel. “It’s important for a company’s leadership team to continue training and developing middle managers to prevent top talent leaving as a result of bad management.”

The survey also asked about the main characteristics that respondents attributed to bad bosses. Some include:

  • Never takes the blame, but first to take the credit: 27%
  • Only notices negatives, never the positives: 26%
  • Uncaring/not empathetic: 18%
  • Doesn’t acknowledge employee’s hard work: 16%
  • Not willing to help employee learn: 15%

The data was collected and analyzed on Oct. 12, 2015.
